Why Did Jesus Send the Cleansed Leper to the Priest?

A man with leprosy came to Jesus and said, “If you will, you can make me clean.” Jesus touched him and answered, “I will; be clean.” The cleansing occurred immediately—before the man ever appeared before a priest.

Jesus then instructed him:

“Go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” — Mark 1:44

Other translations render the closing phrase “as a testimony to them.” The underlying idea is the same: the cleansed man was presented as a witness—visible proof of what Jesus had already accomplished.

The man was not sent to the priest to be cleansed. He was sent because he had already been cleansed. The priestly examination and offering commanded by Moses would provide public testimony of what Jesus had already accomplished.

The proof was standing before them.
